8th Annual 4-H Fishing Derby

On a beautiful Saturday morning over 30 children, parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, gathered at Ed Allen’s Campground for the 8th Annual 4-H Fishing Derby. There were many smiles and fish caught (some fishing for the first time!), with the largest being a Bowfin approximately 20 inches long! This event also served as the culminating event for the New Kent Cloverbuds, who had met in April and learned the basics of fishing, fish identification, and why fish are so important for the environment. Special thanks to Jack Lee who organized this event, Kary Allen for hosting this event and providing a hotdog lunch for all of the children in attendance, and all of the sponsors and volunteers who helped make this a fantastic event for all of the children and families who came out to fish.

If you have any questions about the fishing derby, would like to volunteer to assist with the fishing derby next year, or would like to learn more about 4-H or Virginia Cooperative Extension, please contact Carl Frick, Extension Agent,  4-H Youth Programming.
